Prison Town Is The Safest City in Arizona

What can you say about safety in the town you live in? The Prison Call Deals crew came across an interesting survey that was conducted using FBI statistics on violent crimes and property crimes in more than 100 Arizona cities; it shows that Florence, Arizona, is the safest city in the state.

But Florence, AZ, with a population of 25,795 people, and is home to numerous prison and jail complexes: Arizona State Prison Complex-Eyman and the Arizona State Prison Complex-Florence (including the Florence State Prison), privately run prisons – the Arizona State Prison Florence-West and the Central Arizona Correctional Facility, and the Red Rock Correctional Center, a private facility in Eloy just 30 minutes outside of town.

On the federal level, super-safe Florence is home to the Central Arizona Detention Center, the Florence Service Processing Center, and the Florence Correctional Center. Finally, the city is home to the Pinal County Adult Detention Center.

It is no wonder then that this small Arizona town has only 1.12 violent crimes and 8.68 property crimes per 1,000 people. This makes it safer than more than 78 percent of U.S. cities, the survey concludes. But, since there are a lot of law enforcement officers who live and work in Florence, it is hardly a shock that this town tops the FBI list.

Sahurita came second on the list, and Somerton, Oro Valley, Gilbert, Maricopa, Paradise Valley, San Luis, Surprise and Sedona followed.

Phoenix doesn’t appear on the safe cities list, as the property crime rate is 40.91 per 1,000 people, which is almost five times higher than the rate in Florence. But we shouldn’t neglect the fact that Phoenix’s population is much larger, estimated at 1,485,509 according to FBI data.
