Financial advice in prison?

Would you ever think of going to prison to get financial advice? Most people would say no! But after reading an interesting article in the Financial Buzz, we have to say we just might do that.

The article highlights an inmate – Curtis Carroll – in San Quentin State Prison, who has become well known for teaching his fellow inmates, but also guards and prison volunteers how to stay out of debt and pick the right stocks.  Curtis even has a nickname: “Wall Street”. He is a 35 year old inmate, facing 54 years to life for murder. He is also an example of the positive effects of educational programs in prison, and what a person can achieve if he puts his mind to it. Curtis joined many programs, including business management, and started reading books and started gaining knowledge about business and finance. He then started teaching his fellow inmates about stocks and other aspects of money management, and soon became known not just for his teaching skills, but for his ability to pick stocks.

Through his skills and knowledge, Curtis has made his family money, but has also helped many other people make money.

But he says his biggest reward is seeing that people can use what he taught them to make a better life for themselves.

Do you have some examples of the positive effects of prison education programs? We’d love to hear about them
